How to achieve breakthroughs in life. Have you ever had this happen to you? You were trying to solve a problem and no matter how hard you tried to find a solution, you remained stuck. You went over the problem numerous times. You tried to redefine it. You looked at it from many different angles. It seems that no matter how hard you tried, regardless of when you tried, you could never figure it out.
Much of this has to do with the fact that your conscious mind can easily get stuck in a holding pattern. If you’ve ever been on a plane that was trying to land at a busy airport, you’ve probably experienced a holding pattern before. Your plane would circle around the city several times delaying the moment of your arrival. When the runway clears and your plane is given the green light to land, your pilot will then break the holding pattern and start to descend. That’s how planes work.
It’s not much different from our thoughts. When our minds are burning precious energy trying to achieve some sort of breakthrough, because we’ve found ourselves in a stalemate, we then go into a holding pattern. It’s as if we can’t think of anything new. We just keep revisiting the same things over and over again.
This is not much different from when we lose our keys. When was the last time you lost your keys? I’m willing to bet that when you were looking for them, you kept checking the same places you checked before. At the back of your mind, you knew that your keys wouldn’t be there. After all, you just checked there a few minutes before but you can’t help but keep checking there over and over again.
Maybe you just didn’t look thoroughly enough. Maybe they’re stuck somewhere in the back. Maybe you just didn’t pay enough attention so you keep repeating this pattern over and over again. This is how our minds work.
Unfortunately, this habit doesn’t get us any closer to the solution. How can it? We keep revisiting the same thought process. As the old saying goes, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. How can we achieve different results when we’re doing the same thing over and over again?
When we focus on the present moment, we get the chance to focus on our issues right here, right now. In other words, we can focus all our imaginative and creative resources towards the right problem at the right time and at the right place. This is definitely better than worrying sick about the stuff that may or may not happen, or worse, crying over spilled milk.
By learning to focus on the present moment through mindfulness or meditation practices, we start to look at our situations differently. The reason this happens is because our subconscious mind enters the picture. Our subconscious mind is very powerful. It enables us to achieve breakthroughs when we thought these breakthroughs were simply not possible. This is how to achieve breakthroughs in life.
